Dear Madam,

I have just received your kind letter. Really, I am the one who is confused and has to thank you for the gracious welcome.
You have obliged thousands who have had the joy of hearing and seeing you, and if it were only for that I would be too happy to show your friends my poor and insignificant experiences.
But unfortunately, three weeks ago, since I presented some new results to the Académie des Sciences [French Academy of Sciences], I started building my devices according to my more recent ideas – inventor’s stupidity – and the changes will last about a month. It’s all for the best. But now I keenly regret having undertaken this work.
May I hope that you will stay here long enough to grant me the opportunity to repeat the experience of an evening that left me with such pleasant memories.
In this hope I am, dear Madam, with the expression of my esteem and my most sincere feelings.

All yours.
